India’s Most Haunted Fort, Cursed by a Sorcerer

The Mysterious Ruins of Bhangarh

Nestled in the Aravalli Hills of Rajasthan, Bhangarh Fort stands as an eerie relic of the past, its grandeur overshadowed by the chilling silence that envelops its ruins. The fort, built in the 16th century by Raja Bhagwant Das for his son Madho Singh, was once a thriving kingdom, filled with magnificent palaces, temples, and bustling markets. However, today, it is abandoned, surrounded by a haunting legend that has earned it the title of India’s Most Haunted Fort.

The legend is so terrifying that the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has forbidden entry after sunset, placing a sign outside the fort warning visitors against staying beyond twilight.

But what happened here? Why is Bhangarh considered cursed? To understand the mystery, we must travel back in time to the two most famous legends surrounding the fort’s downfall.

The Curse of the Sorcerer

Long ago, Bhangarh was a prosperous kingdom ruled by King Madho Singh I, and among its residents was a dark and powerful Tantrik (sorcerer) named Singhia. A master of black magic, Singhia lived in the shadows, feared by many but known for his obsession with the beautiful Princess Ratnavati, daughter of Bhangarh’s ruler.

Princess Ratnavati was celebrated for her unparalleled beauty and intelligence. She had countless suitors from faraway lands, yet none could win her heart. Singhia, aware that he could never marry the princess through conventional means, decided to use his dark powers to force her to love him.

One day, as the princess’s maid went to the marketplace to buy scented oil, Singhia cast a powerful spell on the oil, ensuring that the moment the princess applied it to her body, she would become his slave, losing all free will. However, Ratnavati sensed something was wrong. She had long heard whispers of Singhia’s sinister intentions and, trusting her instincts, poured the enchanted oil onto a nearby boulder instead.

What happened next was the beginning of Bhangarh’s doom.

As soon as the oil touched the boulder, the rock came to life, absorbing the dark magic meant for the princess. In a supernatural twist of fate, the enchanted rock was lifted by an invisible force and hurled through the air, directly towards the sorcerer. Singhia had no time to react—the boulder crushed him to death on the spot.

But before he took his last breath, he cursed the kingdom of Bhangarh, vowing that no soul would ever be able to live there in peace, and that the kingdom would be destroyed forever.

The Tragic Fall of Bhangarh

Shortly after Singhia’s death, war broke out between Bhangarh and a neighboring kingdom. During the battle, Princess Ratnavati was killed, along with most of the fort’s inhabitants. Just as the sorcerer had predicted, Bhangarh was left in ruins, abandoned and haunted by the spirits of those who had perished there.

It is said that the ghost of the sorcerer still roams the fort, seeking revenge, while the restless spirits of the townspeople wander through the ruins, trapped by his dark curse.

Paranormal Encounters at Bhangarh Fort

To this day, Bhangarh Fort remains one of the most haunted places in India, with visitors and locals reporting strange occurrences.

Disembodied whispers, laughter, and screams are often heard echoing through the empty halls.
Many have claimed to see shadowy figures and glowing orbs moving around the ruins.
Some who dared to stay inside after dark have mysteriously disappeared or died under strange circumstances.
Locals believe that anyone who enters the fort at night never returns.

The supernatural presence is so intense that even wild animals refuse to go near the fort after sunset. Birds stop chirping, and an unnatural silence falls over the land.

The Government’s Warning

Unlike many ghost stories, Bhangarh’s legend is so widely believed that even the Indian government takes it seriously. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has placed a warning board at the entrance, stating that entry after sunset is strictly prohibited.

Despite the restrictions, many thrill-seekers and paranormal investigators have attempted to spend the night inside the fort—only to report strange and terrifying experiences.

Conclusion: A Mystery That Endures

The tale of Bhangarh Fort is a blend of history, legend, and the supernatural. Whether one believes in ghosts or not, the fort’s eerie silence, its tragic past, and the countless eyewitness accounts of paranormal activity make it one of the most mysterious places in India.

Even today, locals refuse to build houses near Bhangarh, fearing the ancient curse that still lingers over the land. As the sun sets behind the fort’s crumbling walls, Bhangarh transforms from a historical monument into a place of shadows, whispers, and unanswered questions.
